THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS is a national non-partisan political organization established in 1920, the same year the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteed women's suffrage.
Our Greater Hartford League was established in 1923, pursuing the same goal: to produce informed voters. The League is organized on the national, state, and local levels, with appropriate "study" and "action" activities taking place on one or more levels at the same time.
Mission Statement: the League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan, political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
The League acts in a variety of ways: testifying at public hearings, urging legislators to support or oppose bills, and using the mass media to influence the public. In addition, much emphasis is placed on educating the public as well as oneself about current issues. We work to help individuals to register vote and to provide them with information so they can be well informed when they go into the voting booth.
NON-PARTISAN POLICY - The League is an issue-oriented organization which does not support or oppose political parties or candidates.
LEAGUE MEMBERS HAVE SERVED on many governmental bodies, both elective and appointive, at all three governmental levels, and are encouraged to do so.
